The capital of South Africa’s smallest province, Gauteng, Johannesburg is the economic powerhouse of Africa with its ever-growing suburban sprawl creeping outwards from the central city skyscrapers and ring-road motorways.

The city has a number of museums that preserve the historical as well as cultural artifacts of the country. The history museums, such as the Apartheid Museum and the Hector Pieterson Museum attract tourists from all over the world. The city also has several art museums, like the Johannesburg Art Gallery that features South African and European landscape and figurative paintings, the Museum Africa that covers the history of the city of Johannesburg also prove interesting. SA Museum of Military History, SA Transport Museum.  The Market Theatre Complex with three theatres, art gallery restaurants and pubs. The Mandela/Johannesburg Civic Theatre is also very close by.  As symbols of historical importance we have the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Newtown, a bronze statue of Mahatma Ghandi in the city center, the Melville Koppies, Constitution Hill and the President Nelson Mandela Soweto House.  Also nearby is Gold Reef City- a large amusement park. The Johannesburg Zoo as one of the largest zoo’s in South Africa is interesting to visit. Zoo Lake, Santarama Miniland and Entertainment world are also on many a traveller’s sightseeing list.

ERMELO

Ermelo was established on the site of a church built in 1871 by the Reverent Frans Cachet. The site was named after his loyal friend from a town named Ermelo situated in the Netherlands. Ermelo was for a long time, used as a stop over place for wagon trains travelling between Lydenburg on the Mpumalanga Escarpment and KwaZulu Natal. The area was well known for its excellent horse breeders and small livestock. Unfortunately, Ermelo was totally destroyed during the second Anglo-Boer War. Since then, it has been rebuilt and has again become the focal point of the Eastern Highveld.

NEWCASTLE

Originally known as Post Halt Two on the journey between Port Natal-Durban and the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (Transvaal), the town was referred to as Viljoensdorp by the Boers during their brief occupation in 1899. At the junction of three provinces, this ‘natural’ destination and departure point for travellers is now the largest town in northern KwaZulu- Natal.
