South Africa is a multi-lingual country. Besides the 11 officially recognized languages, scores of others are spoken here, as the country lies at the crossroads of southern Africa. English is generally understood across the country, being the most commonly used language in official and commercial public life.

220/230 volts AC at 50 cycles per second. Three pronged plugs are standard so it is best to take an adapter with you however, adapters can be bought at most retail stores.

VAT Refund (Value Added Tax - 14%)

Goods bought in South Africa exceeding R250 allow all tourists to receive a refund of the tax at the airport on their way out. It is advisable to plan an extra hour at the airport for tax refunds, and the best is to have the goods with their receipts ready for the controlling officer.

White River lies just north of Nelspruit nor far from the border with Kruger National Park. It is not a large town but there are some stunning establishments in the fertile surrounding area of scenic beauty. White River is well placed for visiting the rest of the Panorama Route or Kruger National Park.

The climate is said to be one of the best in South Africa, lovely and hot in summer when rainfall is at its highest, and cool nights during the winter. The farms in White River tend to be relatively small but the agriculture is intensive with tropical and citrus fruits in abundance, and vegetables and cut flowers.

Ermelo is the educational, industrial and commercial centre of Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. Mixed farming (maize, cattle, potatoes, beans, wool, pigs, sunflower seeds, lucerne and sorghum) and anthracite, coal and torbanite mining take place here. Ermelo is the crossroads of three national highways, N2, N11 and the N17.

Ruins of a settlement dating 1400 are found in the area while Ermelo itself was founded by Dutch Reformed Church Reverend Frans Cachet who was converted to Christianity in the town of Ermelo in the Netherlands. The town was reduced to a single standing home by the British during the Second Boer War.
